- Welcome to the scoring lesson. By the end of this, you're going to have a clear picture of how your SAT score actually gets built, what it's made of, where it comes from, and what it means.
Starting with the big picture, the SAT gives you scores in two main categories. First, section scores. Reading and writing is reported on a 200 to 800 scale, and your math section score is also on a 200 to 800 scale. Add your reading and writing and math together, and you get a score on the 400 to 1,600 scale, the number most people think of when they hear SAT score.
Now, let's look at the different types of scores involved in getting from your test performance to that final number. The first type is your raw score. That's simply the total number of correct questions you got across the two modules in a section. Raw scores are converted to SAT's 200 to 800 scale.
This conversion accounts for differences in difficulty across test administrations. So your score is comparable no matter which version of the test you took. And then there's the composite score. It's that total score we talked about just a moment ago.
One more type of scores worth understanding? It's not really a score, it's a percentile. SAT percentiles are crucial because they show how you performed relative to other test takers. A raw number like 650 doesn't tell you the whole story.
Your percentile shows where that score puts you in the overall field. For example, the 75th percentile means scoring equal to or higher than 75% of all other test takers. Admissions offices use percentiles to gauge competitiveness, assess academic readiness, and compare applicants from different schools.
Colleges publish the percentile ranges of their admitted students so you can figure out where your score falls in that range. Looking at how your scores compare to the scores of admitted students at schools you'd like to attend, well, that provides very useful context as you think about your target schools.
Now, let's talk about one of the most distinctive features of the SAT, computer adaptive testing. Here's how it works. We'll start with the first module. In the first module of both the reading and writing and math sections, all students are given the same mix of questions.
Some easy, many medium, and some difficult. Everyone starts on the same footing. But the second module is different. Its difficulty depends on how the student performed on the first module. If you performed well on the first module, you'll be routed to a harder second module.
If you performed less well, you'll get an easier second module. Let's take a closer look at what this actually means for your score. A range of scores are still possible whether you get an easier or harder second module.
Getting routed to the easier second module doesn't lock you into a low score. There's still a meaningful range available to you. But if you get an easier second section, your section score potential is capped at the low to mid 600 range.
To break into the highest scoring range, you need a harder second module with more challenging questions. Harder questions have more weight in terms of the overall score. The way this works, even though every question is worth one raw point, a strong performance on the harder second module maps to a higher scaled score than the same number of correct answers would earn on the easier module.
Not that a single question is worth more raw points, it's that the score conversion table is more favorable when you've taken the harder path. Whether you truly need to strive for a harder second section depends on you and your college aspirations. If your target score falls within the range accessible from the easier module, that may be perfectly sufficient.
Now, let's talk about experimental questions. Two questions in each module will be experimental. These will not count towards your raw score. College board uses these questions to test new material for future administrations. They are not marked and there's no way to know the difference between an experimental and a question that counts, so assume every question counts.
And experimental questions could be any type, multiple choice or even grid-ins in the math section. Do your best on every question. One more piece of good news, there's no penalty for incorrect answers. Getting a question wrong simply means you don't get credit for it, but you don't lose anything either.
That means you should never leave any questions unanswered, even if you're making a blind guess. Now, a question that comes up all the time. I got the same number of questions correct as someone else or on another test I took, why are the scores different if the number of correct questions is the same?
That is a great question, let's answer it. On the digital SAT, your score is based on more than just how many questions you got right. The test also considers several other factors. First, which questions you answered correctly? Were any of them experimental?
If so, those don't count towards your raw score. Second, how difficult those questions were, harder versus easier. As we discussed, the same number of correct answers on the harder second module maps to a higher scaled score than it would on the easier module.
And third, how your answers fit your overall performance. Is random guessing apparent? Let's dig into that last point a little more fully. The tests scoring model can detect when a student's overall pattern of answers looks more like random guessing than actual skill.
This is about the overall pattern across the test, not any individual question. So what does that mean for you practically? You should work through the questions to the best of your ability, making guesses when necessary, some by using elimination and some by random guessing.
That's the right approach. The model is looking for students who are clearly guessing. As long as you're working through the test thoughtfully, this isn't something you need to worry about.
